Summer Loving – a florist’s advice on using cut summer flowers

I’m really into growing flowers for the house now and as well as picking flowers from my garden (which I have to admit does cause me a bit of pain!), I’ve turned over an area of my allotment specifically to use as a cutting garden.    I thought it would be interesting to ask a […]

Doesn't look very promising right now but it will be ready for planting in spring. Tucked away in a sheltered corner of a windy site, with wonderful views all around.

The choice of paving stone is such an important de The choice of paving stone is such an important decision for any garden build. We had a selection of slabs sent to this site to make sure the paving will look right next to the surrounding buildings. The yellow & grey tones of the limestone pick up the colours of the Bargate stone walling really nicely.

The walled garden is nearly 2000 square metres in size and work has begun, dividing it up into smaller areas with 2 main paths running up & across the whole space.

One of the last perennials to come into flower, Ac One of the last perennials to come into flower, Aconitum carmichaelii 'Arendsii'. Deep purple flowers from August to October, and a strong upright plant. Often mistaken for Delphinium but flowering much later in the season and shouldn't need staking. Fine in heavy soil and some shade too. Planted here with Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster'.

NB it's a poisonous plant so needs careful handling.

First trip back to see an almost finished garden i First trip back to see an almost finished garden in Basingstoke. My very hands-on and creative clients used my concept plans but managed the landscaping & planting themselves. The outdoor kitchen is about to be built and the sunken area next to it has a log burner for chilly evenings. Porcelain tiles & iroko cladding plus little pops of orange link the house and garden.
Really looking forward to seeing the finished article next year.

Nerine bowdenii. I'm not a big fan of this shade Nerine bowdenii.
I'm not a big fan of this shade of pink, but the flowers are so beautiful, and they come out at a time when most other plants are fading, so I'm always very happy to see them!
Easy to grow in a pot in a warm sunny spot.

Back in May while the rest of the country was digg Back in May while the rest of the country was digging for victory, I decided to take down my greenhouse and put in a large raised bed to grow cut flowers. It's a bit of a random mix this year as I just chucked in whatever I had hanging around in pots, but it's a lot prettier than a greenhouse!
Dahlias, Salvia & Cosmos still going strong & spring bulbs will be going in soon.
